An investigation source assessment can help document why information is treated as verified, unresolved or limited while preserving the underlying source reference.
Useful assessment fields
Consider source ID, source type, proximity to the information, date obtained, corroborating sources, conflicting information, known limitations, verification steps and current status.
Avoid unsupported certainty
A source label should not substitute for documenting what was checked, what conflicts remain and what limitations are known. The Investigation Source Verification Checklist provides a related step-by-step review framework.
Separate source from information
A source may provide multiple claims with different levels of support. Assess material information in context rather than assigning one blanket conclusion to everything a source provides.
Keep corroboration traceable
Reference the records or other sources used to corroborate or challenge information. When accounts conflict, the Source Comparison Template can keep the differences visible.
