An investigation gap analysis turns the question “what are we still missing?” into a reviewable list of information needs and actions.
Useful gap categories
Consider missing dates, incomplete source verification, outstanding records, people not yet contacted, unresolved conflicts, unanswered case questions and incomplete actions. The Investigation Open Items List can be used to keep unresolved work visible.
Connect each gap to a question
Record why the missing information matters and which case issue or decision it could affect.
Assign a next step
Where appropriate, turn each actionable gap into a record request, interview, research task or other tracked action. Use the Investigation Action Tracker when ownership and due dates are needed.
Preserve unresolved gaps
If information cannot be obtained, document that status rather than silently treating the gap as resolved.
Start with the free CaseWorks Investigation Timeline Template or use the Case Management System.
