An investigation case file index acts as a map to the case record. Instead of searching multiple folders to determine what exists, the index identifies major records and where they can be found.
What to include
Useful fields can include item or section ID, record type, description, date, source or owner, related issue, storage reference and review status.
Use consistent record categories
Categories such as intake, chronology, leads, sources, interviews, actions, reports and supporting records make larger files easier to navigate.
Keep stable references
Stable IDs allow records to be referenced from timelines, reports and findings without repeatedly copying their contents.
Index rather than duplicate
The index should tell a reviewer where the underlying record is located, not become another copy of the record itself.
