Investigation Case Closure Checklist: Review Open Work Before Closing a Case

Case closure is easier to review when it follows a consistent checklist. Before a case is marked complete, confirm that the record reflects what was done, what information supports the outcome and whether any unresolved work remains.

Review the chronology

Check material dates, source references, conflicts and unresolved verification issues.

Review leads and actions

Identify open or waiting items and determine whether they require completion, documented disposition or transfer to another workflow.

Review interviews and contacts

Confirm that relevant interview status and resulting follow-up are reflected in the case record.

Review source and document records

Make sure important information can be traced to its supporting source or record.

Preserve the closure record

Record the closure date, status, summary and any remaining limitations according to the procedures applicable to the work.
