Investigation Activity Log Template: Document Case Progress, Contacts and Actions

An investigation activity log creates a chronological record of work performed on a case. It helps a reviewer see how the investigation progressed without reconstructing activity from emails, notes and separate task lists.

Useful activity-log fields

Consider date, time, activity type, subject, action taken, person responsible, related record and resulting follow-up.

Record activity when it happens

Timely entries reduce reliance on memory and make the sequence of contacts, reviews and actions easier to understand.

Keep the activity log distinct from the event timeline

The case timeline records relevant events in the matter. The activity log records investigative work performed. An interview conducted today about an event from last year can therefore appear on different dates in the two records.

Link follow-up to the appropriate tracker

If an activity creates a lead, task or records request, move that work into the appropriate tracker while retaining the activity entry.
